December 9, 2009 — Charles Onyeama, MD passed the 2009 General Pediatrics Certifying Examination given by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). Dr. Onyeama's Board Certification in pediatrics is valid through 2016. Dr. Onyeama is Cibola General’s first and only Board Certified Pediatrician. Dr. Onyeama joined Cibola General Hospital in July from Sinai Children’s Hospital/Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.

Certification by the ABP has one objective -- to promote excellence in medical care for children and adolescents. Certification represents dedication to the highest level of professionalism in patient care. ABP certification provides a standard of excellence by which the public can select pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists.

In order to become board certified, physicians have to meet the following requirements: graduation from an accredited medical school, completion of three years of training in pediatrics in an accredited residency program; verification of satisfactory completion of residency training; possession of a valid, unrestricted state license to practice medicine; and successful completion of a comprehensive one-day written examination.
